- Click on the "wordlist" tab after logging in.
- Click on the "Add words to your list" submit button.
- Choose an appropriate list to select the words you wish to learn and submit.
- Mark the checkbox of the specific words you wish to learn or, more commonly, add all the words to your list.
4. Start your first lesson
- Click on the "Start" tab
- Click one of the submit buttons indicating the number of words you'd like in your lesson or type in the number you'd like in the textbox and press enter.
- Click on the hyperlink "here" after the program verifies that words were properly added to your lesson.
5. Complete the exercise for the first word
- An excerpt from classic literature containing a vocabulary word will appear. Complete the exercise by selecting the correct defininition (1st occurrence of the word), selecting the missing word (2nd occurrence of the word), or selecting first the missing word and then the correct definition (all subsequent occurrences of the word).
- You must determine the correct missing word from the context of the excerpt. This teaches the correct usage of the word and makes associations in your mind with the passage context that will strengthen recall.
- Try to recall the meaning of a word before looking at the multiple choice definitions. Recalling definitions strengthens memory more than just recognizing the definition
6. Score the word
- Indicate with a score of 1 to 10 how well you knew the vocabulary word prior to seeing the definition in the exercise. Use the following scoring guideline:
10 |
You know the word well and permanently, the program dismisses the word from your active list and will not show you this word again. This is most commonly used when you've added an entire list of words to your personal list but already knew some of them. |
7, 8, or 9 |
These are "passing" scores. That is, you know or remember the word well enough to suit your needs. Score a 9 for words you have strong knowledge or memory of and 7 if the word or memory is on the weak side of "passing". A score of 8 will probably be the most common score you award, indicating you knew and remembered the word as well as you wished. The program will intelligently calculate a future date to review the word based on the score you give, the prior scores you gave for the word, and your prior scoring patterns on other words. |
1,2,3,4,5, or 6 |
These are "failing" scores indicating you don't know or remember the word as well as you wish. The program will review these words again within a few days. Score a 1 for a word you don't know or remember at all, a 6 for words that are just below "passing", or an appropriate in-between score. |
7. Complete the lesson
- Complete exercises and score all the words in your lesson.
